Senko Set To Return For Third Season

by Ron White

The Long Beach Bombers are thrilled to announce the re-signing of big Russian defenseman, Oleg Senko. The 6’5, 230lb left-shot is returning for his third season for the Bomb Squad. The 1999-born veteran is coming off his most productive season, finishing with 23 points in 52 games. His career totals are 108GP-5G-34A-39Pts-127PIMs.

Senko increased his point total by 7, despite playing 5 less regular season games in 2016-2017. His size and defensive abilities are at an elite level. His potential lies within his skating, passing, and shooting. His development over the past two seasons led to an opportunity for him at the Fargo Force (United States Hockey League) Tryout Camp, this June. Senko made it through the first round of cuts, and played in the Young Guns Game, for the top young prospects.

In 2015-2016, Senko was honored as the Long Beach Bombers Most Improved Defenseman. He upped his levels of commitment and extra training, last year, and has a bright future if he continues on his current growth curve. As a third-year veteran, he will be looked upon to be more of a leader, this season. Senko originally signed with the Bombers out of Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia. He was scouted by the Bombers at the 2015 KeySport International Camp in Moscow, Russia.

Amir Burguev, fellow countryman and defensive partner, said about Senko, “You know, Oleg is just Oleg. Everyone is in love with him, the kid brings a lot of positive energy. On the ice, he's a king of the D zone; great defensive defenseman. I can't wait to see him.” Bombers goalie, Domenic Bosetti, echoed Burguev, "Oleg is really one of a kind, whether it be his personality or the way he handles himself on the ice. He knows what needs to be done, and no matter how much pressure is on him to stop the other teams top player, it doesn't faze him."

Long Beach Bombers Head Coach & General Manager, Chris White, added, “Oleg could easily be considered our Thorne Cup Playoff MVP in 2015-2016, and was very solid in the Western Division playoffs, this past season. He shines brightest when we play the top opponents, or in the biggest moments. When given a specific task, he almost always executes, and frustrates the league’s best forwards. We have worked hard to improve his weaknesses, and his progress has been mind-blowing. This year will be huge, for him. It is time for him to take the next step; his maturity, work ethic, and dedication will all be closely-monitored. Oleg’s potential, size, and defense have all been a huge value to him. Now, he needs to be a leader, and show the level of consistency that is needed to climb further up the hockey ladder. His decision to re-sign is enormous for our club. As long as he is on the ice, we know that more often than not, we have negated our opponent’s top line. He is almost impossible to beat in one-on-one situations, and we have seen him come away with the puck on several occasions when he is out-manned. We want to see him add some offense to his game, which should be a natural progression, given his first-pass and shooting improvements. He is a very funny young man, and his humor can be a huge asset in the locker room. I am very excited to see just how far we can push Oleg, and witness how he responds.”
