Bombers Sign Physical Czech Defenseman Omelka
The Long Beach Bombers are proud to announce the signing of Czech defenseman, Pavel Omelka. The ’99-born left shot is from Zlin, and stands 6'0, weighing 185lbs. He last played for HK Kromêríž U18. He is from the same hometown as Bombers veteran forward, Tomas Urbanec. Omelka represents the fourth Czech player on the roster (Urbanec, Miroslav Rohlik, & Johnny Hoang).
Omelka was actually on vacation in Southern California, with his good friend, Urbanec. Then, he attended Bombers Main Camp, using former Bombers Captain, Billy Borrmann’s equipment. His straight-line, simple and physical play caught the eye of the Bombers staff. Eventually, the team asked Omelka to return home, obtain a visa, and come back for the 2017-2018 season.
Omelka’s former and now current teammate and friend, Urbanec noted, “Pavel can play the body well, and he can make good defensive decisions. He is a fun guy off the ice. I'm excited to see his development this year."
Long Beach Bombers Head Coach & General Manager, Chris White, added, “Pavel is probably one of the strangest signing experiences we have ever had. He jumped on the ice in some one else’s equipment, worked hard, added some grit to our defensive core, and we just decided it fit. So, he traveled back to Czech Republic, to obtain a US visa, and take care of some school work. We are looking forward to him coming back with his own gear, and starting to develop within our system. We have three very solid offensive defensemen, in Amir Burguev, Erik Lundgren, and Anton Ahlin, so Pavel will compliment that group by playing physical and defensive-minded. He is a hard-working, respectful young man, and we are thrilled to see how much of his potential can be realized, this season.”
